God’s Helping Hand #4

Greetings everyone! I hope you have had another good couple of weeks. The Lord has blessed us with some rain here in Ontario, Canada. The strawberries are pretty much finished, the raspberries are beginning, as well as the peas; the plants are growing great, weeds are flourishing, . . . God is good!

Thank you very much, Sarah, Marie, Tana, Ryan, and Bobbi Jo, and Hector for your replies and Sarah, Marie, and Tana for your introductions. I love reading them, and I am sure the others do, too.

Our question was:

What is your favorite Bible character and why?

Sarah’s answer was:

My favorite Bible character would have to be Moses. I guess I like him because he grew up with a lot of riches but gave it all up just to do as the Lord wanted. I am sure that took a lot of faith. I also like Moses because of how close he was to God. I would love to have a relationship with God like he had. To me he is someone with a lot of courage, faith, and love for his Lord.

Marie’s answer was:

I would say my favorite is Queen Esther. She was so courageous in standing up for what was right. And even though she probably didn't want to be queen and would have been happier elsewhere, she accepted it as God's will and trusted that He had a purpose for her. What an inspiration!

Tana’s answer was:

My favorite Bible character is King Jotham. His story is in 2 Kings 15:32-38 and 2 Chronicles 27.

Ryan’s answer was:

I find inspiration in the example of Noah who was a righteous man in the midst of a very wicked society. Noah found grace in the eyes of God, and he was a just man (Genesis 6:8,9). He trusted God's command to do an outrageous thing, to build a very large wooden boat on dry land (Genesis 6:22). And he spent 100 years (Genesis 5:32; 6:10; cf. 7:6) completing this very difficult task, just because God said so. Noah rejected the live-for-the-moment lifestyle described in Luke 17:27. Noah proclaimed God's law (2 Peter 2:5), while enduring the scorn of his contemporaries. He persevered in faith to receive the salvation God had appointed for him. (cf. Hebrews 11:7)

Bobbi Jo’s (16) answer was:

I would say one of my favorite characters in the Bible is 'Noah’. I don't think we really can imagine all the ridicule he went through while building the ark. Think about it: there had never been rain from the sky up to this time ( let alone a world flood ) and so when Noah started to build the ark as God had commanded, you can see what was going through the peoples thoughts, but Noah had amazing faith and God blessed him.( Genesis 6,7,8 )

Hector’s answer was:

… As for you question, I'd have to say Jonah. Here was a man of God who did everything to get away from what God wanted him to do. And when he finally did do as God told him, he gave such a loveless message to the city that it couldn't brake anyone's heart. In his message, there was no pity, no plea for mercy, just the message. And when this proud man gave it, he knew of God's mercy and justice, and yet was saddened to see the city not destroyed because they repented. It just reminds me of my personal case--I ask daily, am I doing what God wants me to do? Am I running away from what Jesus asks me to do? How am I giving the message of Christ our Saviour to the world? Am I that proud to destroy my enemies that I don't want to share the Love of the Gospel? My pastor said that we are not born with the love for others--but we can ask for God to place it in our hearts that we may reflect His glory. May God be with you today.

Editor’s Note:

I really appreciate all of your answers! I think my favorite Bible character is Timothy. He is an example of what we, as Christian young people, must be. "And that from a child that hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." II Timothy 3:15. His mother and grandmother taught Timothy the Scriptures. He was homeschooled! I am very thankful that I have had this opportunity and privilege -- to be schooled at home, and taught the Word of God. It is the food, which keeps us alive—spiritually!

An introduction…

Hi, my name is Sarah. I am 14 and live near Orangeville, Ontario. I have two sisters, one older, one younger. I love animals, especially dogs, but don't have any. I volunteer at a grooming shop once a week and help them a bit. I wish to be a teacher because I like kids. My hobbies are: swimming, hiking, anything to do with the outdoors, computer, animals (of course!), and walking with the Lord.

Another introduction…

My name is Marie Reist. I'm 17, and will be entering my senior year of high school soon...my 12th year of being homeschooled, as well. (13 if you count kindergarten.) I thank God that He gave me parents willing to sacrifice the time to teach me and my two younger brothers at home, as I know it has been such a positive influence in my life. I read as many books as I am able, and write as well as I am able. <g> I love cooking, especially Italian food, gardening and growing herbs for cooking, and anything to do with music--playing, singing, or just listening.

And another introduction…

Hi. My name is Tana. I am 14. I live in the Amazon basin in South America, on the frontiers of Colombia, Peru, and Brazil.

Would you like to introduce yourself?

Here's the idea: any time a Scripture passage you're reading JUMPS out at you and SPEAKS, and you want to share it, type the verse out, and explain what it said to you, and send it to the list! To join the list, simply send a blank email to scriptureshare-subscribe@yahoogroups.com from the address you want to receive emails at, or go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scriptureshare and subscribe there.

I'm looking forward to sharing with you, and benefiting from what you all have to share! -Joel

A Living Bible

His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans,
and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years
of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He
became a Christian while attending college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative
church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure
how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there.

He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service
has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat.
The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat. By now
people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything.
Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit and, when he realizes
there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although
perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had
never happened before in this church).

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick.
About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the
church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the deacon
is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly
man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane
and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to them-
selves that you can't blame him for what he's going to do. How can
you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand
some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach
the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's
cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can't even hear anyone
breathing.

The minister can't even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he
has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor.
With great difficulty he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and
worships with him so he won't be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the minister gains control, he
says, "What I'm about to preach, you will never remember. What you have
just seen, you will never forget. Be careful how you live. You may be the
only Bible some people will ever read."

How true it is! We need to each of us stop and ask ourselves "What kind
of testimony do give through my actions?"

For the Journey

A young Christian packing his bag for a journey said to his friend, "I have nearly finished packing; I only have to put in a guide book, a lamp, a mirror, a microscope, a telescope, a volume of fine poetry, a few biographies, a package of old letters, a book of songs, a sword, a hammer, and a set of books I have been studying."

"But you cannot put all that into your bag," objected the friend.

"Oh, yes," said the Christian. "Here it is." And he placed his Bible in the corner of the suitcase and closed the lid.
